There are 5 steps to start a data science career:

- Education: Although to start with Data Science, you don’t need strictly from any educational background, however, there are certain areas wherein your expertise will ease your path to start a data science career. Some of them include computer science, math, economics, business studies, statistics, or programming background.
- Skills: Once you’re very much confident in starting a data science career, you will need to acquire some of the necessary skills. You can start with the basics of Python or R, Statistics, and SQL to understand the database. Later on, continue with Machine Learning and the deep learning parts like Computer Vision and Natural Language Processing (NLP).
- Projects: Once you’re done with at least the machine learning part of your data science career track, you will need to get the practical knowledge. Start with some simple projects available on Kaggle and later on move to the tough ones. Your Kaggle rankings add a sparkling value to your profile which is preferred by the employers.
- Certificates: Gain some of the valuable certificates which can show your competency to the employers. You can start with EDx.
- Once you’re going all well with the above 4 parts of your data science career track, start applying for jobs. Even a paid or unpaid internship will work.
