Puri is married to Urmila and they have two children: son Neil (born 1960) and daughter Namrata (born 1962). Puri was enduring from myelodysplastic disorder, an uncommon kind of blood cancer, and had experienced brain surgery for his condition after he was admitted to the Hinduja Clinic on 27 December 2004. His condition required visit expulsion of the blood collected within the cerebral locale of the brain and after a short time, he slipped into a coma without further ado sometime recently his passing around 7:30 a.m on 12 January 2005.

His body was brought to his home for individuals to pay their final respects, and his memorial service was on 13 January 2005 at Shivaji Stop crematorium.
