Mohammed Yusuf Khan, better known by his stage name Dilip Kumar, is an Indian actor working in the Hindi industry. Alongside his film career, he dominated the Indian film industry from the late 1940s to the 1960s and was known to audiences as Abhinay Samrat (Hindi for “King of Show”). Kumar holds the record for most Filmfare Award wins for Best Actor (eight after a draw with Shah Rukh Khan) and is the first recipient of the award. It is also known as the first inn” of Indian cinema. With a box office success rate of over 80%, it holds the record for the most box office receipts by a star (male or female) in a Hindi movie and holds multiple box office records.

Dilip Kumar (Dilip Kumar), formerly known as Mohammad Yusuf Khan (Mohammad Yusuf Khan), was born to a Hindi-speaking Hindkowan Awan Muslim family near Qissa Khawani Market, Peshawar, Northwest Frontier Province, in a British Indian family. He was one of twelve children born to Lala Ghulam Sarwar Khan and Ayesha Begum. His father is a fruit merchant.

Khan studied at Barnes School in Deolali (now Maharashtra), where his father owned a vineyard. He grew up in the same neighbourhood in Peshawar as his childhood friend, Raj Kapoor, who would later become his colleague in the film industry.

He moved to Pune in 1940 and opened a dried fruit and grocery store. Although Khan was originally from Peshawar, after the partition of India in 1947, the Khan family decided to settle in Mumbai.

Khan never lived up to his real name and debuted in Jwar Bhata in 1944 under the stage name Dilip Kumar. In her biography, Dilip Kumar: Objects and Shadows, she writes that the name was suggested by Devika Rani, one of the producers of Jwar Bhata. Lala Ghulam was one of the twelve children of Sarwar Khan and Ayesha Begum. His father is a fruit merchant. Kumar has five brothers: Nasir Khan (a young filmmaker), Ehsan Khan, Aslam Khan, Noor Mohammed, and Ayub Sarwar. Kumar has six sisters: Fauzia Khan, Sakina Khan, Taj Khan, Farida Khan, Saeeda Khan, and Akhtar Asif.

On October 11, 1966, Kumar married actress Saira Banu.

They have no children. In her autobiography, Dilip Kumar: Things and Shadows, she revealed that Banu got pregnant in 1972, but complications arose during the pregnancy and resulted in a miscarriage. After that, they had no more children; in 1951, they thought that it was God’s will.

Kumar’s first love was actress Madhubala. They met and fell in love on the set of the movie Tarana. However, this is not the truth of their relationship. Madhubala’s fat father, Ullah Khan did not approve of the marriage and forbade his daughter to marry Kumar. The two actors remained friends until Madhubala died in 1969.

Kumar was also linked to actress Kamini Kaushal early in her career. However, the relationship fell apart.

Kumar was a devout Muslim and a staunch nationalist. From 2000 to 2006 he was a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award in India, in 1991, and 1994, Kumar died at the age of 98 on July 7, 2021. Kumar’s debut in 1944, Jwar Bhata, went unnoticed. After two unsuccessful films, Jugnu (1947), his fourth film starring Noor Jehan, broke his first major box office record. His next hit was the 1948 movie, Shahid and Mela. Both Jugnu and Shaheed are the most successful Indian films of the year they were released.

In 1949, he got the lead role in Mehboob Khan’s Andaz starring Raj Kapoor and Nargis. At the time of its release, Andaz was the highest-grossing Indian film of all time until it broke Kapoor’s Barsaat record that same year. Shabnam hit another box office hit in 1949. 1975 film Sholay.

Over a decade in production, the film was originally shot in black and white, with only two songs and the climax shot in colour.
