Diljit Dosanjh was born on January 6, 1984, in Dosanjh Kalan village, Philaur tehsil, Jalandhar district, Punjab, India, to a Sikh family. Her father, Balbir Singh, is a former employee of Punjab Roadways, and her mother, Sukhwinder Kaur, is a housewife. He has two siblings, a sister and a brother. He grew up in Dosanjh Kalan before migrating to Ludhiana, Punjab, to finish his education, including a high school diploma from Shri Guru Harkrishan Public School. While still in school, she started her singing career by performing Kirtan (Sikh religious music) in local gurdwaras. Diljit Singh and his family moved to Ludhiana, where they now live.

Diljit’s debut album, Ishq Da Uda Ada, was published in 2004 on the T-Series label by Finetone Cassettes. Rajinder Singh of Finetone, who assisted Dosanjh in making his debut in the Punjabi music scene, urged him to write his name Diljit rather than Daljit. Bablu Mahindra composed the music, and Balvir Boparai wrote the lyrics. Dosanjh contributed vocals for all eight tracks, and the producer directed the album’s title video. Dil, his second album, was published on the Finetone Cassettes label in 2004.

2011 witnessed Dosanjh’s entry into mainstream Punjabi cinema. His first movie, Lion of Punjab, was released in February 2011. In 2021, Sonam Bajwa released the series under producer Honsla Rakh, starring Shehnaaz Gill and Shinda Grewal. The film grossed 5.05 crores on its opening day, making it the highest grossing Punjabi film on its opening day. He signed with Warner Music in March 2022.

In April 2023, Dosanjh performed at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, becoming the first Punjabi artist to do so.

In 2023, YouTube announced that Dosanjh will make a movie about the life of Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila.
