About Johnny Lever

After being born on August 14, 1957, in Kanigiri, Andhra Pradesh (Dharavi), Rao John PrakashJohny Lever” Janumala spent his childhood in the King’s Circle neighbourhood of Mumbai. He is known professionally as “Johny Lever.”

He is a comedian and actor working in Bollywood who hails from India. He speaks Telugu as his first language.  Because of the financial struggles that his family was going through, Johnny Lever was only able to complete the seventh grade at Andhra Telugu School. He was unable to continue his education after that. He subsequently came to the conclusion that he would not continue his education and would instead start performing a variety of odd jobs.

One of these occupations was selling pens on the streets of Bombay (now known as Mumbai) while mimicking Bollywood stars and dancing to their tunes.

In addition, Johnny Lever acquired his signature humorous acting style during the formative years he spent in Yakutpura, an old city located in Hyderabad. After seeing comedians like Dinesh Hingoo and Nerella Venumadhav perform on stage and comedians like Johnny Walker, Kishore Kumar, and Mehmood perform in movies, he grew interested in imitating people and doing stand-up comedy, and he ultimately made the decision to pursue a career in the field.

He sought the guidance and support of his instructor Pratap Jani and the mimicry artist Ram Kumar with respect to imitation, and they both aided him and taught him the principles of mimicry. Lever and his father were both employees at the Hindustan Lever plant in Mumbai throughout Lever’s childhood. He entertained his industrial employees by imitating Elvis Presley as he worked, much to their amusement.

At one of the events that were being hosted at his company, Johnny Lever was asked to put on a show and demonstrate his skill. It was his performance that earned him the respect of both his employees and the factory authorities, which led to the establishment of his professional reputation.

After gaining some notoriety, he started performing in musical shows (orchestras), and after some time, he became a member of the famous music-directing pair Kalyanji-Anandji. Alongside them, he participated in a number of performances and travelled on a number of significant international tours, one of which was with Amitabh Bachchan in the year 1982.

Because of the immediate success he had at orchestras, he was unable to find the time to perform, so another comedian, Johnny Fever, took over. But Fever was only able to enjoy temporary success as a result of Raju Srivastav’s arrival in Mumbai around the same time and his decision to start filling in the gaps.

After seeing him in one of his performances, actor Sunil Dutt approached him about playing the main part in his first film, which was titled Dard Ka Rishta. In the 1980s, Johnny Lever achieved even more prominence after recording the mimicry and comedy album Hansee Ke Hungame, which went on to become a huge hit throughout India and the rest of the globe.

Around the same period, Johnny Lever was featured in a few adverts for Shekhar Kapoor’s Kachua cheap incense. He participated as a filler in a charity concert that was called “Hope 86” in 1986, and the crowd really liked him. The event was held in front of the entire Hindi cinema industry. After seeing how talented he was, the producer Gul Anand gave him a part in the film Jalwa, which also starred Naseeruddin Shah.

Because he is considered to be a notable Indian comic, a great number of other comedians have pointed to him as a source of inspiration. He has been nominated a total of 13 times for the Filmfare Award in the category of Best Comedian, and he has won the award on two separate occasions.
