Artificial intelligence and face analysis software is being used in job interviews in the Uk for the first time – as businesses turn to technology for the best candidates. The software program, created by US company HireVue, analyses language, tone and also records the face expressions of applicants as they reply to questions on video, the Telegraph noted.
700 companies across the globe have already adopted this technology including Urban Outfitters, Hilton, Vodafone, and Unilever, and more than 1,00,000 interviews have been conducted to date in the UK.
HireVue claims to boost a firm’s quality of hire by 88%, range by 55% diversity, and fill up roles in a company 90% faster. The software works on certain algorithms to compare an applicant’s 15 minutes video against 25,000 pieces of data gathered from previous ‘successful’ hires. But academics have warned that face analysis or perhaps AI software might have’ biases’ that would rule out skilled candidates who’d have been ‘great at the job’.
Anna Cox, professor of human-computer interaction at University College London, said:’ It will favor individuals that are very good at doing interviews on video and any data established is going to have biases within it that will rule out individuals that really would’ve been great with the job’.
Griff Ferris, Legal and Policy Officer for Big Brother Watch, put in that the’ faceless artificial intelligence system’ might have’ chilling implications’ for job seekers. He added, ‘As with most of these systems, unless the algorithm has been taught on an extremely different dataset there is a very high probability that it might be biased in a way, leading to applicants from specific backgrounds being unfairly excluded and discriminated against.’
“The candidate’s language, tone of voice and facial expressions these are the main assesses used by the software algorithm”, said Loren Larsen, Hirevue’s chief technology officer.
The software analyses expressions including brow furrowing, lip tightening, eye-widening or closing and smiling throughout the candidate’s video interview.
He said:’ There are 350ish functions that we take a look at within language: which do you use active or passive words? Do you discuss “We” or “I” If somebody speaks very slowly, you’re most likely not going to remain on the phone to purchase something from them.’
Mr. Larsen included he would’ much prefer’ to get his’ first screening having an algorithm’ which’ treats him fairly’ than a single which depends on’ how exhausted the recruiter is’.
According to the website, HireVue is available in more than 30 languages and has hosted over 10 million on-demand interviews as well as 1 million assessments throughout the globe.
The HireVue OnDemand video program, they said, lowers the demand for companies to’ synchronize applicants & calendars’, enabling companies to spend much more time’ deciding between probably the best candidates’.
