Here are few of the reasons-
1) Certificates That Aren’t Accredited: If you want an official certification, Udemy is not for you. You could also look into Coursera or edX.
2) Udemy does not create course material itself: The course instructors are responsible for creating the content on Udemy, which can have an impact on the course’s quality.
3) Course Quality Control: Udemy has a quality control system in place, but with so many courses, how thorough can this be?
For my study on data science job applications, I spent a lot of time talking to data science companies earlier this year. The thing that NONE of them care about is what? Certificates. I quizzed everyone I spoke with about the qualities they were looking for in candidates for jobs as data analysts and data scientists. The transcripts of my interviews total hundreds of pages. Never once is the word “certificate” used. While not useless, certificate programs are only as valuable as the material they cover. Employers are interested in your skills, and more precisely, in the skills, you can demonstrate. Your professional experience and projects in a portfolio or on Github that they may view demonstrate your skill set.
It really depends on what you want to achieve. Yes, if you use those courses and certificates to gain key knowledge and skills that will allow you to advance your capabilities in areas that are extremely important to you, or to create a remarkable portfolio of actual work deliverables as evidence of your capabilities. If your intention is to simply add them to a list of certificates on your resume. Then yeah it is a terrible idea to rely just on Udemy data science course to acquire a job in data science.
