And police are turning to hackathons to discover better ways to help people. The ‘India Police Hackathon 2019,’ which started on Saturday, is the  1^st such event being organized by the Karnataka police.
Suman Gupta, an MTech student of the Indian Institute of Science(IISc), is making use of deep learning techniques to develop coding solutions for facial recognition – 1 of the question provided to the participants on the Hackathon.
Suman believed that the coding that she’s working at is going to help the police track ‘missing person’ in and criminals. “Deep Learning will help in recreating images. Therefore if a person has gone missing, he or she may be tracked by the coding that we’re attempting to develop,” stated Suman.
Deep Learning is an emerging region of machine learning analysis. One of the key objectives of its is moving closer to Artificial Intelligence(AI). The Hackathon is being co-hosted by RV College of Engineering(RVCE). The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers is the knowledge partner.
ADGP Sanjay Sahay, Police Computer Wing, Government of Karnataka, stated 45 teams were shortlisted. “We are attempting to get talent from all across the nation. By coding for police, we’re coding for India, and that is the saying of this particular Hackathon,” he stated.
The 45 teams are from Delhi, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Chennai. The coding competition has 5 problem statements for what the participants have to develop coding solutions. These facial recognition, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways data analysis, unified communication App developed for the police department, centralized regular beat management solutions and connecting online profile for open-source Intelligence.
Amit B K of Reva University, a participant, must develop an Unified Communication App for the Police Department.”We are attempting to create a unified App, which may be utilized to communicate critical command messages from a unit officer such as the District Superintendent of Police to his subordinates and colleagues. He is able to get real-time updates on work accomplished and the impact,” said Amit.
Sapna Tewari, Joint Director, Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau, mentioned that the Hackathon was getting hosted by the Ministry of Home Affairs. “It is a platform to exchange ideas. The end result will be discussed at the DGPs’ convention on 6 December. The police department requires to get up with the newest technological advances and such interactions are incredibly important to provide the police with innovative concepts for a much better security infrastructure,” Tewari said.
Rama Subramaniam, Chief Strategy Mentor of’ Turbostart’, requested the Hackathon programmers to publish their startup suggestions for their national team to avail as many as Rs 2 crore funding and help from Turbostart.
Yatheendranath T J, in charge of the IEEE Computer Society operations in India, said 57% of schedule overruns are due to lack of suitable layouts by software engineers. One of the things which the programmers needed to do was to analyze and look for patterns from the data of accidents that have occurred across India this year. The programmers have to develop proper navigation bars, that would help determine the danger zones or regions, that were accident-prone. “This would assist the police in stopping highway accidents,” said a programmer.
Till now we had been working in silos. The hackathon has opened the area for a much-desired coordination among the police, industry, and academia, who’re the service providers,” stated Divyanshu Verma of Intel.
