The SANS Institute, established in 1989, is a leading organization dedicated to providing world-class cybersecurity training, certification, and research services. Founded by Dr. Alan Paller, SANS emerged from a need to address the growing threats to information security and the lack of skilled professionals in the field. Since its inception, SANS has played a pivotal role in shaping the cybersecurity landscape and equipping individuals and organizations with the knowledge and skills needed to combat cyber threats effectively.

SANS provides a wide range of cybersecurity courses and certifications, which can be taken either online or in-person. The courses cover various cybersecurity domains such as penetration testing, incident response, digital forensics, and secure coding. SANS is highly respected for its practical and hands-on training approach, which is led by experienced and knowledgeable instructors. Their certifications, such as GIAC Certified Incident Handler (GCIH) and GIAC Certified Penetration Tester (GPEN), are widely recognized within the industry.
I have taken several SANS courses and found them to be extremely valuable. The instructors are knowledgeable and the materials provided are directly applicable to my work in security. However, it’s important to keep in mind that you need to renew your certification periodically. It’s not like getting a degree from a university that lasts a lifetime, which means you have to keep paying to keep your certifications valid.
My experience with SANS’s cybersecurity course has been extremely frustrating. Despite the inflation of these courses, the course quality and course content is far below expectations. The content is often outdated and not up-to-date, leaving students ill-prepared for real cybersecurity challenges.
In addition, the teaching method of SANS is very ineffective. The course is based on more passive upadhyanas and principles in study, thereby not properly preparing students to develop real skills and face innovative problems. This system fails to teach and does not help students excel in the field of cyber security.
Overall, investing in SANS cybersecurity courses has been a regrettable decision for me. Inflation coupled with lack of quality of education has made it difficult for me to justify the value of this investment. As a student, moving towards excellence in cybersecurity, I recommend checking out education options that offer a more holistic and up-to-date curriculum.
Right now I am pursuing my cybersecurity course from them and I would like to say that SANS offers a variety of courses tailored to different skill levels and interests. For beginners, I’d recommend starting with courses like “SEC301: Introduction to Cyber Security” or “SEC401: Security Essentials Bootcamp Style.” These courses provide a solid foundation in cybersecurity concepts and techniques. Additionally, exploring their “OnDemand” and “Live Online” options can provide flexibility in learning.
